After Lanyon's death, Utterson tried to maintain normalcy. Passing Jekyll's courtyard, he saw his friend sitting by the window, an infinite sadness in his eyes. 'I am very low,' Jekyll said. But as they spoke, a convulsion of terror struck the doctor's features--a look of inhuman suffering. He thrust the window down before Utterson could react, hiding whatever nightmare had just assaulted him from within.
