A year of relative peace was shattered by a crime of singular ferocity. Under a full moon, a maid witnessed an encounter between an aged gentleman and Mr. Hyde. Suddenly, Hyde broke out in a flame of anger, stamping and clubbing the victim with ape-like fury. The body was found mangled, beside it a broken cane--one Utterson had gifted to Jekyll. The lawyer was summoned to identify the victim: Sir Danvers Carew.
