The creature describes his awakening: confused, alone, abandoned. He hid in a hovel beside a cottage, watching the De Lacey family through a crack. From them, he learned language, read books, discovered what humanity could be. He also learned he would never have it. When he revealed himself, they attacked him. Rejection taught him hatred.
